<p>Those words can  be applied to so many aspects of life &#8211; success, healthy eating, exercise, etc. If we could all remember those words when self-defeat is knocking on our door.</p>
<p>Anyway, today I am linking up with Jill again from <a href="http://http://jillconyers.com/" target="_blank">Fitness, Health and Happiness </a>to bring you another Fitness Friday post! Ever since I started working a <a title="A Bittersweet Week" href="/2013/11/07/bittersweet-week/" target="_blank">more traditional job</a> a few weeks ago, the husband (he plans and writes all of my workouts&#8230;lucky gal!) has tailored each day to be quick and effective. Not in the version of 10 minutes quick, but quick enough that I get a great workout in a shorter period of time (cardio and weights).</p>

<p>My routine usually looks something like this:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Monday:</strong> chest + interval sprints on the treadmill</li>
<li><strong>Tuesday</strong>: back + jump rope intervals/tabata</li>
<li><strong>Wednesday</strong>: legs + <a title="Fitness is a Priority: M100s and Running." href="/2012/03/23/fitness-is-a-priority-m100s-and-running/" target="_blank">M100s</a></li>
<li><strong>Thursday</strong>: shoulders + 2 mile run</li>
<li><strong>Friday</strong>: bis/tris (longer workout with higher sets/reps keeping my heart rate up so no cardio)</li>
<li><strong>Saturday</strong>: yoga</li>
<li><strong>Sunday</strong>: long walk with the pups</li>
</ul>
<p>Today I am going to share the interval sprint workout that I usually do on the treadmill on Mondays just in case you are looking for a quick and effective cardio workout. This can be done on any day of the week and provides a great cardiovascular workout in 15 minutes time. It is a high intensity interval workout that is great for burning a lot fat in a little bit of time. I got off of the treadmill dripping in sweat, feeling like I just completed a 10 mile run. When it&#8217;s just too cold it hit the pavement, you won&#8217;t get bored with this treadmill workout.</p>

<p><strong>Looking for some encouragement to workout today? </strong>New <a href="http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/43/1/1.full.html" target="_blank">research</a> is suggesting that a lack of cardiovascular fitness is killing more people than diabetes, smoking and obesity combined. Around 3.2 million deaths occur per year due to physical inactivity. I&#8217;m not at all trying to scare you with &#8220;death statistics&#8221; but as I always say, I believe the only way that we can change is through application of education and knowledge. As a health professional, I believe it&#8217;s up to me to provide you with the information in order to be able to do so.</p>
<p>On a positive note, did you know that some folks suggest that by simply taking the stairs or walking your pup only twice a day can increase your life expectancy by about half a year? That&#8217;s a lot of time for only a little bit of effort! Regardless of how you get your exercise in, make room for it, it&#8217;s important!</p>

Did you know that most people gain on average one pound during the holiday season. As I mentioned yesterday, that may not seem like a lot but over the course of time, those pounds really add up. As holiday treats, dinner parties and festive cocktails seem to pop up everywhere during this time of year, with a little bit of extra thought, all of these things can fit into a healthy lifestyle.</span></p>

<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;"><strong>1. Approach this year differently</strong></span></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">For most of us, it&#8217;s unpractical to try to loose weight during these next few months. Instead of setting yourself up for failure, focus on eating healthy in order to maintain your weight and remember like everything, this is a season of your life in which you should enjoy … moderately, modestly and healthfully. </span></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><strong style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">2.  Eat only the things that matter most to you</strong></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">If Thanksgiving just isn&#8217;t Thanksgiving without your grandmother&#8217;s famous sweet potato pie, go for it! Have a slice now and take a piece for tomorrow and let that be that. Enjoy the things that you love the most and pass on the other things. Often we find ourselves eating things just because they are in front of us, when we really don&#8217;t even like them. By sticking only to the foods you love and passing on the rest, you will eliminate unwanted and unnecessary calories that you didn&#8217;t even want anyways.</span></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><strong style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">3.  Exercise</strong></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">Sticking to a consistent exercise schedule is crucial during this time of year. Life might seem a bit busier for all of us right now, but your fitness dates should be kept just like your dinner parties. Exercise is a great way to combat the excess calories that come in the form of holiday cookies, cocktails, dressings and pumpkin pies. Usually when we exercise, we tend to eat healthier too &#8211; after all, who wants to blow an hour workout on one piece of pie? Not me! If you do have to cancel your gym date, simply try to be more active throughout the day &#8211; take the stairs at work, stand when you have the option, park further away from your destination, etc. Whatever you do, just be more active!</span></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><strong style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">4.  Avoid overeating</strong></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><span style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">This one is much easier said than done, but it is a surefire way to avoid excess calories. While the food might be absolutely delicious, remember this: you ARE going to eat again. Whatever the meal, most likely, it is not going to be your last. When making your plate, scan the table to find the things that you want the most. Whatever you put on your plate, you are likely to eat, therefore, only put the things on your plate that are worth the added calories. Fill up on veggies, lean proteins and fruits and enjoy casseroles, sweets and sauces in small amounts! And just remember, you don&#8217;t have to be the winner of the clean plate club every year!</span></p>
<p style="border: 0px; margin: 15px 0pt 20px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; font-size: 13px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #555555; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 23px;"><strong style="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; background-color: transparent;">5.  Go one-for-one</strong></p>

Most of you know that alcohol is very dehydrating, therefore, by mixing in a water before/after each alcoholic drink, you will help keep your body hydrated, fending off a hangover too! Alcohol also lowers your healthy eating intentions too, so try to stick to only one or two beverages too. <p>At work, the wellness team is hosting a <strong>&#8220;Maintain Not Gain&#8221; </strong>challenge for employees this holiday season and here&#8217;s why: <strong>Most people tend to maintain their weight all year long and then from Halloween to New Years Day they gain on average one pound.</strong> That may not seem like a lot, but over ten years that&#8217;s ten pounds. In ten years, do you want to be ten pounds heavier?</p>
<p>For most of us, the answer is probably no!</p>
<p><strong>Because of this, I&#8217;ve decided to start a &#8220;Maintain Not Gain&#8221; challenge here on The Gypsy Dietitian throughout this 2013-2014 holiday season! </strong></p>
<p>You all know that I am not a huge fan of the scale and I&#8217;d rather you base your weight on how you feel in your clothes, but when it comes the &#8220;Maintain Not Gain&#8221; challenge, we will use the scale to measure our success since it is a quantifiable number.</p>
<p><strong>How it works:</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Pick a day and time this week (before Thursday) that you will be able to consistently weigh yourself for the next six weeks. It is important that you select a day and time that you can repeat each week &#8211; pick one scale too (for accuracy purposes). For example, if you select Tuesday morning at 6 am (before you&#8217;ve put anything in your body!), stick with that same day and time each week.</li>
<li>For the next six weeks, weigh yourself on that same day and time and record your weight.</li>
<li>Your last weigh in will be the week after New Years Day.</li>
<li>You can either email me your weekly results (scale photos &#8211; you can even blur the first two numbers if you want to) or send a before and after at the end of the six weeks. One winner will be selected based on those of you who &#8220;Maintain Not Gain&#8221; this holiday season. If you don&#8217;t want to send your pictures, you can absolutely still participate, you just won&#8217;t be eligible for the prize!</li>
<li>To join in on the challenge, simply send me an email (thegypsydietitian {at} gmail {dot} com) and tell me that you will be participating! And then the photo sending is up to you!</li>
</ol>

<p>Anyway, before we get any further, I have to share a hilarious story with you give you a good laugh this Friday. Bright and early this morning, I pulled into my parking spot, jumped out of my car and started in on my ~10 minute walk into work. I jump off of the elevator and start marching toward my building and before I could even make it 10 feet, my heel got caught on the cuff of my pants and by the time I even realize it, both of my shoes have flown off of my feet, my water bottle is empty a few feet in front of me and I am laying face down on the pavement with scuffed up hands and a slight tear in the cuff of my pants. I immediately jumped up, put my shoes back on and looked around for someone to share my embarrassing moment with and there is absolutely no one around to laugh at myself with… well, besides the fact that I was standing between two sky rise office buildings, therefore, someone had to have gotten a good laugh on this early Friday morning. Since there was no one there to share my laughter with, I figured I had to share this with you. I keep thinking about it in my head and laughing about how ridiculous it was. You would think that would ruin my Friday morning but actually I just can&#8217;t stop laughing about it.</p>
<p>But anywayyyyy… on to something a little less ridiculous

<p>Since starting my job on Monday, the hardest part for me has been the amount of time that I have spent sitting each day. At Mayo, I sat a lot but I also walked up and down the hospital stairs all day long. And since leaving Mayo, I rarely let myself sit down for an extended period of time. You have to know that sitting for hours on end is driving me crazy.</p>

<p>We all know the importance of being active and for me, a one hour workout isn&#8217;t enough. In order to combat this new more sedentary lifestyle I have been doing a few things (and plan on continuing them) in order to prevent myself from packing on a few pounds over time. You know, no one gains weight over night &#8211; it&#8217;s over time that the damage is done. Here are a few of my tips preventing weight gain when working a sedentary job:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Get your exercise in in the morning.</strong> I do this for many reasons. If I do it in the morning then I am guaranteed to get it done. As the day goes on, things come up, we all get busy and it&#8217;s easy to cross through your planned workout time. I also do this in order to get my heart rate up first thing in the morning so that at least while I am sitting at work, I know my heart rate and metabolism is slightly elevated because of my workout. I&#8217;ve been good about this every morning except this morning, when I decided to listen to my body and get one more hour of sleep. I&#8217;ve been running on 4-5 hours of sleep each night this week which IS NOT enough for me.</li>
<li>That leads me to… <strong>get enough sleep</strong>. If you get enough sleep then it is easy to get up in the morning and workout. Without enough sleep, not only is it much easier to press the snooze button multiple times, but studies actually show that people who sleep five or less hours of sleep are more likely to gain weight due to elevated cortisol levels (the hormone that is responsible for abdominal fat).</li>
<li><strong>Clean up your eating</strong>. When a sedentary lifestyle strikes, clean eating is even more important. Not that isn&#8217;t important for all of us, but when were exercising and active, a little treat here and there is more likely to be burned off than if we&#8217;re sedentary.</li>
<li><strong>Push away from your desk. </strong>When your actually at work, sitting for hours on end, make it a point to get up at least once an hour to walk around and stretch out your legs. Did you know that our bodies burn far more calories when we are standing than we are sitting? I like to set an alarm (on vibrate) for a particular time on every hour (for example, I do five minutes until the hour from 8am to 5pm) so that I will be more aware about how long I have been sitting. This is not only beneficial for your body, but studies actually show that your memory and attention is improved if you push away from your desk and take a break frequently.</li>

<p>I have talked to you a few times about the <a title="Tip of the Week Tuesday: It’s a New Day" href="/2013/09/30/tip-week-tuesday-new-day/" target="_blank">importance of listening to your body</a> when it comes to all things, but especially <a title="Self-care through Yoga" href="/2012/01/07/self-care-through-yoga/" target="_blank">fitness</a>, and for me, this was one of those weeks. After <a title="I like to move it, move it." href="/2012/07/20/i-like-to-move-it-move-it/" target="_blank">hitting the weights consistently</a> for the past few months, I could tell my body needed a break and a week to recover and repair. Because of that, instead of lifting any weights this week, I have opted for <a title="Self-care through Yoga" href="/2012/01/07/self-care-through-yoga/" target="_blank">yoga</a>, <a title="Killer Cardio in No Time" href="/2013/05/01/killer-cardio-in-no-time/" target="_blank">sprints</a>, <a title="A Double Boxer Run" href="/2012/01/18/a-double-boxer-run/" target="_blank">distance runs</a> and long walks.</p>
<p>You might <a title="Yoga Anytime, Anywhere" href="/2013/05/29/yoga-anytime-anywhere/" target="_blank">remember me talking</a> about <a href="www.myyogaworks.com">MyYogaWorks</a> a few months ago. MyYogaWorks is an online, at home yoga subscription that allows you to select the level, length and style of the class and plays it right on your computer screen, iPad or iPhone. Since Dustin and I are on the road so much, MyYogaWorks was the perfect solution to help me keep up with my yoga practice without being a member at a yoga studio. Since things are changing in my life and I will soon be a little bit more settled (<a title="Happy Halloween + November News" href="/2013/10/31/happy-halloween-november-news/" target="_blank">as mentioned yesterday</a>), I canceled my MyYogaWorks subscription with plans to join a yoga studio soon. To me there is nothing like a good, in-studio practice, but sometimes an at home, online class is just what I need!</p>
<p>Before I find the perfect studio for me, in the meantime, I did a little bit of research and found this incredible online class (for free might I add!), that I want to share with you today. <p>I have taken this class multiple times in the past few weeks and love it every time. It is an intermediate class that is 48 minutes in length and is described on the website as the following:</p>

<p>Anyway, have you ever noticed that when it rains it pours? Well this was certainly one of those weeks, but in a good way, for me and Dustin! We received lots of good news this week… yesterday, as we were pulling in the driveway Dustin even said, &#8220;Let&#8217;s check the mail. With the week that we&#8217;re having, you never know what could be in there!&#8221; Haha…and although there was no large lump sum of money in there, we are so grateful for all of the blessings we are receiving this week. God is good.</p>
<p>Even with all of the good things going on right now, I&#8217;m actually writing this post at 4:30 am. I haven&#8217;t <em>not</em> been able to sleep in quite a few months. Normally, when I have one thousand things running through my mind, those are the nights that I used to toss and turn just thinking about them. <a title="C’est La Vie, Internship and Exciting News!" href="/2013/03/09/cest-la-vie-internship-and-exciting-news/" target="_blank">Since the completion of my internship</a> however, there are been very few sleepless nights. I have no idea why my body wouldn&#8217;t sleep last night? <em>Does this ever happen to you? </em>Instead of fighting it, I laid there for about 15 minutes and then decided to get up and get a little bit of work done since we have a busy day ahead. I hate not being able to sleep; not only because I am tired the entire next day, but also because I know my body isn&#8217;t repairing and rebuilding like I know it normally would after a hard workout like I had yesterday (remember, <a title="Fitness Friday: Leg Circuit" href="/2013/09/27/fitness-friday-leg-circuit/" target="_blank">Wednesday is <em>always</em> leg day in this house</a>

<p><a title="Fit Friday – At Home Cardio + Leg Workout" href="/2013/07/12/fit-friday-at-home-cardio-leg-workout/">Leg day</a> is always on Wednesdays in this house. Not because I say so but because that&#8217;s just the way it&#8217;s always been. Since I started working out with the husband a few years ago, Wednesday was leg day just like Sunday was church day. And this past Wednesday was no different. We didn&#8217;t make it to the gym until around 8 pm, so I was already a little bit (or a lot!) hesitant to go, but after completing the workout I felt accomplished, strong, and happy that I did it.</p>

<p>Although I have a love hate relationship with leg day, I have to admit my favorite part about it is that it&#8217;s not only a great resistance training day but also an awesome cardio day as well. And that&#8217;s no different with this Fit Friday: Leg Circuit edition, for us done on Wednesday but for you done any day!</p>

<p><strong>This workout is very challenging so be sure to listen to your body and do only what feels comfortable. As I always mention when I share any of the workouts that I do, I am not a certified personal trainer only a fitness junkie. I do what works for me, as you should only do what works for you. Always use proper form, doing your own research when necessary. Before beginning any new fitness program always consult your physician.</strong></p>

<p>In my fitness journey, I really feel that I have done and seen it all when it comes to gyms, or rather the facility/location that I choose to work out in.</p>
<p>From at home fitness DVDs like<a title="March Madness + Healthier Pot Roast Recipe" href="/2010/03/01/march-madness/" target="_blank"> P90x and Insanity</a>, to prestigious places like <a title="Self-care through Yoga" href="/2012/01/07/self-care-through-yoga/" target="_blank">Lifetime Fitness</a>, to 24 hour clubs like anytime fitness, to yoga studios, to my college gym haven, the <a href="http://recreation.georgiasouthern.edu/facilities/recreation-activity-center/" target="_blank">RAC</a> (I miss this place everyday!), where I not only worked out but <a title="Great news!" href="/2011/06/09/great-news/" target="_blank">taught yoga too</a>, I&#8217;ve experienced a wide variety of fitness facilities. To add to the list I&#8217;ve even certainly spent a lot of time in your standard gyms like Gold&#8217;s Gym, Bodyplex, World Gym, YMCA, and small local gyms, and the list goes on and on. <a title="Moving is for the birds!" href="/2012/06/22/moving-is-for-the-birds/" target="_blank">Moving 12 different times</a> in the past 5 years has really expanded my gym experience, but that&#8217;s not to say that I enjoyed each of these gyms equally.</p>

<p>As a female it&#8217;s easy to fell unwelcome in a gym, especially in the weight room. It&#8217;s easy to feel uncomfortable as &#8220;Mr. Meathead&#8221; looks at as if you have no idea what you&#8217;re doing. &#8220;Sorry Mr. but our goals aren&#8217;t the same.&#8221;</p>

<p>Thankfully, most days I workout with Dustin, so he can be the buffer between me and the guy that thinks girls shouldn&#8217;t lift weights, but it&#8217;s still frustrates me on the days that I go in there alone and feel a completely different vibe.</p>
<p><strong>That brings me to this weeks TOTW Tuesday, which is to find a place that you feel comfortable working out. </strong>Whether it be the convenient gym down the street, your empty spare bedroom (motivation is hard with this one though!), a yoga studio, or the pavement, it doesn&#8217;t matter where you workout as long as you feel comfortable enough to show up day after day.  This may seem like a no brainer but until we remove all barriers to our workout regimen, it will be pretty easy to skip a day or two here and there and then a week or two goes by and then we&#8217;re not even using our gym membership, all because of some guy that makes us feel uncomfortable when we reach for the 15 pound dumbbells.</p>

<p>Last night I had the opportunity to attend a Bloggers Dinner at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/RocHouseFitness" target="_blank">ROC House Fitness Spa</a>, where the gave us a tour of the facility and fed us a delicious dinner from their organic cafe.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><em>The team greeted us with our choice of white wine, red wine or champagne. For dinner the chef served steamed spinach, roasted veggies with a cilantro chili sauce, brown rice, tossed salad, fingerling potatoes, and chicken for the others. The night was finished off with a very berry dessert packed full of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. A lovely dietitian approved dinner to say the least!</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/RocHouseFitness" target="_blank">ROC House Fitness Spa</a> was &#8220;designed with <em>her</em> in mind,&#8221; and after speaking with <a href="http://theheatmag.com/former-nba-player-larry-hughes-roc-house-fitness-spa-in-atlanta/" target="_blank">owner and Former NBA player Larry Hughes</a> and touring the facility, this was obvious. Larry knows a thing or two about not only fitness but what it takes to get the job done.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">This &#8220;boutique-like gym,&#8221; offers everything from cardio equipment, a weight room, a virual spin studio, fitness classes like TRX, yoga and pilates to a full service spa (hair + nails), organic cafe (cook-to-order meals + a smoothie bar) and retail shop.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">ROC House Fitness is located in the heart of Buckhead and will open its doors this Saturday to all members! If you are a female living in the Atlanta area and are looking for a non-intimidating space to call your &#8220;gym home,&#8221; definitely check out ROC House Fitness or at least find a place that you do feel comfortable in!</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">*And just a <a title="Puppy News + Friday Favorites: Top Health and Wellness Websites and Apps" href="/2013/09/06/health-wellness-websites-apps/" target="_blank">quick doggie update</a> for those of you interested: Gunner had two X-rays done yesterday and after talking to the vet, it seems as though Gunner is doing okay! The X-ray did show &#8220;dysplastic&#8221; areas, as well as a little bit of inflammation, however, he told us that right now it is far too soon to warrant surgery (whew!). He said that Gunner will have to have surgery in the next 5-6 years but that right now a few preventive measures can be taken. I think it is FAR to early to say something like that, and with good care (I am going to add in a few high quality supplements as well as change up his diet), I think all of this can be stopped in its tracks. Gunner seems to be doing much better (besides the fact that he was neutered yesterday too), so I thank you for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes!</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve shared with a few of you that the youngest of our two Boxers, Gunner, has been having some hip issues lately. He&#8217;s really struggling to get up after laying down, even for only five minutes. Some days he will just look at me with his sad Boxer eyes and cry until I come help him up. If you&#8217;ve met Gunner or know any Boxer for that matter, the word slow and Gunner/Boxer are never used in the same sentence. Gunner is one of the wildest dogs you will ever meet, until recently.</p>

<p>After a few weeks of praying it was only a pulled muscle, Dustin and I took him to the vet yesterday afternoon. The vet said that it is most likely early signs of hip displasia and that he needs to come back for an x-ray ASAP. Monday morning at 9am Gunner will be put under for an x-ray and diagnosis. Depending on the results, an extensive surgery might follow in the weeks to come unless prayers are answered and a miracle occurs.</p>

<p>Of course, I&#8217;ve been doing my own research regarding natural ways to help my little guy out. A lot of people report that they switched their dogs from a store bought dog food diet to a homemade diet (including meats, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats only &#8211; no grains) and added in supplements like glucosamine and chondroitin, vitamin C, MSM, fish oil, etc. and this really helped ease the pain but I still have a lot of research to do.<strong> Have any of you ever tried any of these methods for canine hip dysplasia or even just to keep your pup healthy!? </strong>Regardless of the diagnosis, something isn&#8217;t right.</p>
