To My Fellow Protein Bar Makers: Homemade Protein Bar Recipe

by Ashley on June 1, 2011

There are a few of you that trusted me months back and lives were changed forever, literally.  I’ve had more people tell me that they made my protein bar recipe, or their own version of, and couldn’t get over how good they were.

Well to those of you who trusted, I’ve found an ingredient that you must add, MILLET.  It really canges the entire texture of the bars; it makes then even more crunchy with an inner crisp, while offering more protein and important nutrients including manganese, tryptophan, magnesium, and phosphorus just to list a few.  I added about half a cup.

Magnesium is important in bone health and heart function, as well as vital in the synthesis of protein, fat, and nucleic acids.  Magnesium supports the normal functioning of the immune system.

Phosphorus  is important in bone and teeth formation and maintenance, as well as a necessity for overall growth because is a part of the make up of DNA and RNA.

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid (building blocks of protein in our bodies), meaning that you must obtain it from food because your body can’t make it alone.  Tryptophan can be converted to Niacin (a B Vitamin), when needed as well.

Also, adding about 2 tablespoons of cinnamon makes them even better!  If you haven’t tried my homemade protein bar recipe, check it out here.  They are sooo good!  One of my dad’s good friends even said, “I’m just excited to go to sleep at night, knowing that I get a protein bar tomorrow morning!”

You can add any dry fruit that you wish, in the picture above, I used dried cherries, a first for me, but delicious to say the least, adding even more antioxidant power!

I feel like my dad was probably the one who gets excited for bedtime anticipating “the bar” in the morning…that sounds so much like something he’d say. I’m so enjoying reading your blog! Mom and I shopped this afternoon and I’m working my way towards vegetarian (small steps). I’m about to eat quinoa for the first time; we’re making the banana dessert tonight – SO EXCITED! 🙂
